My project at the Mbagathi District Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, consisted of assessing and teaching health care workers about the need for constant surveillance and immunization for the 6 childhood immunizable diseases that KEPI (Kenya Expanded Program on Immunization) is working to contain or eradicate. The diseases are polio, measles, pertussis (whooping cough), turberculosis, tetanus, and hepatitis B. Most of the cases in the wards were tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, diarrhea/dehydration, and meningitis/malaria.

India - Tuberculosis Research Centre

The Tuberculosis Research Centre(TRC), formerly known as the Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Centre is a permanent research institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It was established in 1955 jointly by the ICMR, World Health Organisation (WHO), the Government of Tamil Nadu (then Madras), the British Medical Research Council (BMRC) and the United States Public Health Services (USPHS) to determine the feasilibility, efficacy and safety of domiciliary chemotherapy for sputum positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients. TRC's famous "Madras Study" demonstrated that TB patients could be safely treated at home and revolutionized the management of this disease in India and all over the world. It released a number of beds in TB sanatoria and more importantly reduced capital costs.

PHRI Russian TB Control Program

The tuberculosis (TB) epidemic in the Russian Federation has reached alarming proportions, particularly in the prison system. The Russian prisons act as an epidemiological pump releasing tens of thousands of active TB cases and hundreds of thousands of infected individuals into the community each year. The high rate of drug resistant TB among the prisoners, which cannot be cured with common TB drugs, is especially threatening. Young men enter prison and die even before their cases are tried in court, which may take up to 18 months. Russian TB epidemic poses global threat.
