Guernsey - Sausmarez Manor
|
The Dower Flat is on the ground floor of the Manor and consists of one double bedroom, an additional cot can be hired, hall and passageway, living room (with views over the lake and tea garden), and includes dining area and kitchen. The bathroom comprises of a bath, washbasin, toilet and a washing machine. There is a hairdryer. The kitchen has a new electric cooker/oven, microwave and fridge. The new hot water boiler is in the living room and comes on early at about 6:30am and again at 3:30pm for about an hour in the summer and more in the low season if the heating is required. This is set to avoid any disturbance as it cannot be heard from the bedroom if the door is shut and turns itself off at about the time people return in the afternoon. Functions, wedding receptions and the occasional ball occur at the Manor and in marquees. Easy parking, free access to the Subtropical Wild Woodland Garden, the Sculpture Trail and the rest of the gardens. Before renovation it was where my mother lived. It is all on one level and so easy for wheel chairs and has its own access. Also on site are the 9-hole par 3 pitch & putt course, the putting green, the dolls house collection, the café and lakeside tea garden and childrens scrambly castle. During the day the grounds are open to the public and are busy in parts, particularly on Sunday afternoons but go quiet at 5 o clock till about 10 o clock the next day. Pets are not allowed because of the ornamental ducks on the pond and the chickens, which are completely free range. Shops There is a Supermarket, a Wine Warehouse, Midland Bank, cash machine, Chemist, Doctors Surgery, Post box and public telephone (about 300 yards away). Beaches No beaches are far away, the furthest is 8 miles as the crow flies. The nearest are Fermain, arguably the prettiest in the islands on the east coast, within easy walking distance if you are reasonably fit, and Moulin Huet on the south coast which was painted frequently by Renoir, a bit further than Fermain. Whether you drive or cycle to near these, you will have to walk down the last part on a path, which includes steps for Moulin Huet. Cliff Walks The island boasts some of the finest cliff walks in Britain, some with views over the other islands and France. They are well maintained by the island authorities. Banks Apart from the many banks in St Peter Port, in the parish there are the Midland/HSBC, Nat West and Lloyds TSB; and Barclays are represented at the post office in the Co-Op supermarket, a ten-minute walk to the south. A hole in the wall is available for all these except Barclays. Buses Public transport during the day is frequent and inexpensive during the season, 50p a trip or 25p for short season ticket. Bus routes 7, 7A (goes right round the island) 6, 6A, 5 & 5A all pass the bottom of the drive. Taxis Taxis are easily booked. Medical Insurance You are advised to take out medical insurance as the National Health does not cover the islands. Departure It would be a kindness if the flat is vacated by 10:00am on the day of your departure. (If you have any problems with luggage during your last day we can look after it for you) |
