Brittle Bone Society
|
Founded in Dundee in 1968 the Brittle Bone Society is the only UK wide organisation providing support to people affected by the rare bone condition Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). It was established by a Dundee woman, Margaret Grant, who has OI. When she was young Margaret was aware that there virtually no support for people with OI and that many medical professionals knew little or nothing about the condition. When her daughter Yvonne was born some years later very little had changed. Margaret was convinced that there were other OI people in the same position as herself and that they would all benefit from supporting each other, and so the Brittle Bone Society was born. For many years Margaret was the driving force of the BBS, which was recognised when she was awarded an MBE in 1989. Still based in Dundee the BBS now has around 1,000 members, some of whom are second or third generation of the same families who contacted Margaret more than thirty years ago. We still offer help, support and advice to anyone affected by OI, including family, carers, social workers and other professionals. |
