TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is a small device that many people find effective in relieving pain. TENS has become a recognised and well-proven method of treating pain. Research, technology and quality engineering have made TENS a safe and highly effective pain relief system, recommended by Pain Clinics, doctors, maternity and physiotherapy departments throughout the UK and internationally.

What conditions can be relieved by TENS?

TENS provides pain relief for a large variety of pain complaints. Commonly treated conditions include:

  • Labour Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Osteo- Arthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Cancer Pain
  • Sports Injuries
  • Almost all Muscular-skeletal Pains Neuralgia
  • Menstrual Pain
  • Phantom Limb Pain following Amputation
  • Post-operative Pain.

    How does TENS work?

TENS relieves pain in two ways. Electrical pulses pass from the machine through electrodes placed over the nerve centres. Benefit is felt firstly by blocking the pain signals normally sent to the brain through the nerve fibres; thereby interrupting the brain's awareness of pain.

Secondly, the body is stimulated to increase it's own production of natural painkillers known as endorphins and enkephalins.

    Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Treatment using NMS or EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) create involuntary muscle contractions thus minimising the degeneration changes in muscles that usually occur following immobilisation or partial denervation.

    Indications for Neuromuscular Stimulation

Neuromuscular Stimulation is indicated for use in conditions that may result in:

  • disuse atrophy (tissue wasting)
  • restricted range of motion such as sprains
  • joint and ligament repair or reconstruction
  • knee cartilage injury (chrondomalacia patella)
  • stroke and spinal damage.

    NMS is also indicated for:

  • the re-education of partial nerve damaged muscle groups,
  • for relaxation of spastic muscles,
  • post-operative care to improve blood flow in selected muscles,
  • the maintenance of range of motion
  • a complimentary way to perform muscular training

What conditions can benefited by using NMS?

According to research patients who benefit from NMS include those with the following conditions:

  • strokes
  • head injuries
  • neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, and Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • spinal injuries
  • cerebral palsy
  • joint replacements
  • tendon repairs
  • urinary and rectal incontinence
  • arthritis

As with TENS there are a number of necessary precautions. Terms and Conditions - Click here, and should be thoroughly read before placing an order.
