The site is set on sloping ground, with steep slopes in places. Access around the site is on rural surfaces, mainly rolled or loose chippings, in keeping with the nature of the site and buildings. Some roads and paths are cobbled and their surfaces may cause some difficulty for visitors who use a wheelchair or have impaired mobility

We suggest that, if possible, visitors using wheelchairs should use those with wide tyres as this makes access easier and smoother. The use of a powered wheelchair or four-wheeled mobility scooter allows access to the majority of the open areas of the site.

A number (but not all) of the main buildings are accessible to wheelchair users as ramps are available for people to get inside the houses.

The Museum has lots of seats around the site, which cater for visitors who tire easily or need to take things more slowly to enjoy the Museum at a more leisurely pace.

    Provision for Disabled Visitors
The Thackray Museum strongly believes in access for all and was designed to ensure that disabled visitors were catered for.
    Travel
The museum has a car park with spaces reserved for orange badge holders and the car park is situated next to the museum entrance. There is a dropped kerb and the approach to the museum is level.
The bus stop is situated approximately 100 yards from the museum.
    Admission
Normal admission charges apply, but essential carers are admitted free of charge.
    In the Museum
The museum exhibitions are spread over 2,500m2 on two floors. There is a lift to all floors, and seating throughout the galleries.
All areas of the museum are accessible to wheelchair users and space for wheelchair users can be reserved in the conference centre auditorium.
There are two wheelchairs available for loan for any person who may require the use of one. This includes the elderly and those visitors with walking difficulties.

Text sheets are also available from reception for people with hearing difficulties. The sheets correspond to any part of the visitor tour which contains audible materials, for example Interactive TV screens and videos.
Many areas of the museum also contain objects, displays and activities which can be touched and handled to enhance the visitor experience.
    Toilets
Fully accessible toilets are located on the ground floor next to the lift, and on the first floor in the entrance to the conference centre.

A special comprehensive Vistors Guide for Wheelchair Users is available which also gives information on the various access routes available.

  • The site is set on sloping ground, with steep slopes in places. Access around the site is on rural surfaces, mainly rolled or loose chippings, in keeping with the nature of the site and buildings. Some roads and paths are cobbled and their surfaces may cause some difficulty for visitors who use a wheelchair or have impaired mobility
  • We suggest that, if possible, visitors using wheelchairs should use those with wide tyres as this makes access easier and smoother. The use of a powered wheelchair or four-wheeled mobility scooter allows access to the majority of the open areas of the site.
  • A number (but not all) of the main buildings are accessible to wheelchair users as ramps are available for people to get inside the houses.
  • Accessible Cafe
  • The Museum has lots of seats around the site, which cater for visitors who tire easily or need to take things more slowly to enjoy the Museum at a more leisurely pace.

    Disabled access:
The ground floor of the House is accessible for wheelchairs. If you cannot walk up the stairs, which are shallow but quite long, your admission price is halved. We have a tape recording of the upstairs tour, which you can listen to and then rejoin your tour as they come back downstairs. There is at least one chair in each room if you cannot stand for long.
    Parking:
For disabled and those unable to walk far is just outside the House Entrance. A ramp can be provided for the few steps into the House. For the Tea rooms you may park just outside.
    Garden Facilities:
    Wheelchair Access:
The paths are hard and mostly level but the Gardens are listed and old, so we ask for your understanding that it is not all tarmac! There are gentle slopes on the walk to the American Gardens but wheelchair users with strong arms or motors have said it is worth the effort! There are 2 ramps onto and off the grass on the East Lawn. There are steps around the garden. We have a leaflet at the house or Craft Gallery which shows you where these are. The tea rooms and craft gallery are both wheelchair friendly.
    Toilets:
Toilets are situated near the tea rooms and there is a toilet suitable for disabled use. There is also a baby-changing mat in the ladies toilet.

Audio tapes are held at reception and can be used by the visually impaired to assist in their visit. The tapes play an audible version of the text, which is displayed in all the ground floor galleries. The tapes are re-charged regularly and are always re-wound ready for use.
    Cafe and Catering
The cafe is accessible to all disabled visitors and an at table waitress service can be offered to disabled visitors if they require this facility. We are also able to cater for special dietary requirements if visitors contact us in advance.

Disabled access: The ground floor of the House is accessible for wheelchairs.

A special comprehensive Vistors Guide for Wheelchair Users is available which also gives information on the various access routes available.
